Final Reflection (Blog Post #7)

It has reached to the final week of the semester. What did I learn and gain from this module Es2007s?

Throughout the whole module for 12 weeks, my understanding for effective communication skills is tremendously stretched out. In Es2007s module, we are encouraged to broaden our thoughts and ideas in various aspects of communication skills. Before I took this module, I did not have a deep understanding in the interpersonal communication. To maintain in a good harmonious working relationship within each other, this module has taught me how to deal with people at a personal level to solve the problems, negotiate differences and handle conflicts to get work done successfully. Such interpersonal skills are being known as EQ (Emotional Intelligence).

Another thing I have learnt from this module is writing a professional resume and job application letter. From this course I have learnt how to promote myself with an attractive resume. Previously, I really did not know that the cover letter has to be matched with the job advertisement. With Ms Kim’s guide, finally, I have known how to present my resume and cover letter attractively.

One more thing that I want to improve is my oral presentation skill . I tend to get nervous while I was presenting in front of a group of people and it had led my speech to be very fast. Therefore, in future, I have to practice more and pay more attention in this area.

Lastly, my experience in the research project has been very pleasant with my group members JooSoon and SiokHui. And also, thanks to all the classmates. Especially, I would like to say a great thank to Ms Kim for spending the time with us.

Through this course, I developed and applied interpersonal communication skills during the research project. Working well with your group members requires effective interpersonal communication skills. Using the correct words and tone, we can discuss our ideas in a more critical, yet constructive manner. Also, I gained a lot from learning how to write a cover letter. A cover letter is an important channel to convince the employer you are the perfect candidate for the job. Writing effectively is also a skill I want to improve on. During oral presentations, I believe everyone had a certain degree of stage fright and it applies to me too. However, we need to learn to be natural and confident and through the comments of Ms Kim and our classmates, I realised the areas which I needed to improve on. My experience with ES2007S was an enriching and enjoyable one!

Yeah.. stage fright goes with me too!! and it definitely makes me talk a lot faster. For me, I try to rehearse more and remind myself to take more deep breathes when presenting so that I can slow down my talking speed. But well, I guess it was not very successful and I would need to try to take more breathes!!!

Personally, throughout this course I also have learnt a lot of things such as the cover letter and resume. However, one of the other learning aspects for me was that there is "no hard and fast rule" (quoting Ms Kim) (but yeah its unofficial citation) to the cover letters and resume etc. which I think it is very true as it also has to depend on how appealing it is to the interviewer and also on other factors like job requirements etc. Thus, I guess it really depends on each situation and we would probably have to be adpative and willing to learn.

It has been great working with you on the project!

EQ was one area where I didn't find important in the past. However, after taking this course, I feel that EQ is in fact more important than IQ! We will meet with all kinds of people in our future workplace and we would have to rely on our EQ to make decisions which can have a big impact on others and us. Thus, I agree with you that EQ is important.

I also have the problem of becoming nervous when I am doing a presentation. This nervousness led me to speak very fast in my past presentaions. Fortunately this time, I am able to control the speed of my presentation but unfortunately, I still stumble on my words. I was also not able to display confidence. Thus, I feel that I will have to spend more time praticing in future for any presentations that I may have. Let's work hard for our future presentations! :)

regarding to EQ, I was also shocked when I found my result of the test was below average. However, I did not take it too serious. I think different people have different personality. High EQ doesnot mean you are better than others. On the contrary, those people with low EQ(like me -.-) may have some advantages over those high EQ people as well.

Hi May, I agree with you that we did learn may aspects of interpersonal communication. Before this course, I also think that communication is simply talks. But now I have a better understanding of it. I believe if we’d do the EQ test one more time now, we would have a higher mark! (To Zheng Ning also)

Yeah, if i have adopted these interpersonal skill earlier, then i should able to handle my past interpersonal conflict better. Also, before taking this module, i oftenly add in unnecessary details in my resume. I have corrected my mistake and learn the skill to write a professional resume.

Besides that, i wish to improve my oral presentation also. And i faced the same problem as you but i will stammer and tend to forget what i want to present. =(

Anyway, good luck for your coming exam.

Hi May,

Glad to know that the course has "stretched" your understanding of communication skills and that you have benefited from it.

Do continue to practise the skills learnt and I'm sure they will serve you well in your daily interaction with others as well as in your academic/professional pursuits.

Thanks for all your effort and hard work. I really appreciate it, knowing how much more difficult it must be for foreign students like yourself to do a course like this.

It has been a pleasure having you in my class.

All the best for your next semester!
